IAA Transportation 2024: Continental introduces digital exterior mirrors as a standard solution

Modular System ProViu Mirror, consisting of high-resolution cameras and displays in the driver's cabin, is intended to improve all-around visibility and safety and eventually replace conventional exterior mirrors.

With ProViu Mirror, a digital camera monitor system for commercial vehicles, Continental presents a modular alternative to traditional exterior mirrors. The indirect vision system, available both as an original equipment and as a retrofit solution, is based on individual cameras and high-definition (HD) displays. These are installed in and on the cabins of trucks, buses, or off-highway vehicles, providing drivers with additional fields of view to numerous blind spots. As a replacement for conventional mirrors, they are also intended to reduce noise levels, maintenance costs, and—thanks to improved aerodynamics—fuel consumption while driving. ProViu Mirror offers the driver the field of view of exterior mirrors of classes II and IV as well as optionally classes V and VI, and according to the manufacturer, it is the first standard single-camera system with a functional ASIL B safety rating.

The cameras are based on LVDS technology (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) with a frame rate of 60 fps and an image latency of less than 80 ms. The camera resolution is three megapixels. Camera modules with built-in lens heating reduce the impact of rain, ice, and snow on the image. The extended field of view can be customized to meet individual needs while complying with relevant regulations. For image playback, optically bonded black-panel displays are available in sizes of 10.0, 12.3, or 14.5 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 720 (RGB) or 1280 x 720. Starvis™ technology automatically brightens the displays based on the ambient brightness detected by light sensors. A CAN interface enables the integration of additional ADAS functions (Advanced Driver Assistance System) such as a parking assistant and a turn assistant. The system operates with a flexible power supply of nine to 32 V.

With its platform approach, the ProViu Mirror offers various configurations for all types of commercial vehicles. Four packages for different mirror classes and combinations are available as standard. To install and adjust the system to the respective driving conditions, Continental provides a configuration tool.
